‘당신과 내가 손을 잡을 때’, <핑거 플레이>, 2020

‘당신과 내가 손을 잡을 때’는 <핑거 플레이> 연작을 구성하는 작품으로, 팬데믹을 경험하면서 ‘나’라는 개인이 사회 안에 어떻게 존재하는가를 더욱 선명하게 느끼며 사회와 우리가 따로 또 같이 관계 맺고 있는 모습을 드러내고자 한 작업이다. 손을 잡는다는 것은 다른 신체 부위가 타인과 맞부딪혔을 때와는 달리 다양한 의미를 가져왔다. 하지만 코로나로 인해 타인과 손을 잡을 기회를 잃어버렸다. 

어려운 시간을 보내고 있음에도 불구하고 이 사회 곳곳에는 여전히 서로가 연대하고 서로를 돕고 응원하는 현상이 끊이지 않는다. 각자의 위치에서 자신의 자리를 훌륭히 지켜내고, 타인과의 접촉을 피하면서 배려하고 답답한 마스크를 쓰고 서로를 지나치는 행위는, 어쩌면 현재를 살아가는 우리가 타인과 사회를 배려하고 관계 맺어 나가는 일종의 손잡기 행위일지도 모른다. 각각의 프레임에 갇혀 있는 이미지들이 붉은색 실로 연결된 장면은 현재를 살아가는 나와 우리, 사회의 모습을 보여주고 있다고 할 수 있다

‘The Way We Hold Hands’ from the series Finger Play, 2020

As part of the Finger Play series, The Way We Hold Hands is designed to shed light on how individuals exist in society, especially during the pandemic, and how people, individually and collectively, build a relationship with others. Holding hands has a special meaning, unlike holding other body parts. Unfortunately, the global pandemic has robbed people of the opportunity to hold hands with others. 

In this time of difficulty, we still see cases where people stand in solidarity, help, and cheer up one another. Everyone doing their share of work, avoiding contact with others, caring for others and keeping a mask on around others may be considered an act of holding hands. Various images caught in a frame connected by the red thread are portraits of each of us living in today's world and society as a whole.
