공존과 대체

류승진은 변화하는 도시 내부의 노동 환경에 주목한다. 그가 한국과 일본에서 촬영한 일련의 사진은 공유 경제 패러다임으로부터 시작된 무인 시스템의 풍경이자 코로나19의 팬데믹 사태와 함께 확산된 언택트 문화에 내재한 불길한 미래의 징후이다. 

사진 이미지에는 빛을 발하는 심야의 배경 위로 가시화된 원색의 기계 장치들이 마치 개성 넘치는 인간의 모습을 대체하는 도시풍경의 구성요소처럼 남겨져 있다. 류승진은 이러한 풍경이 특정한 장소에 국한된 것이 아니라 전 지구적인 양상임을 나타내기 위해 장소성이 유추될 만한 텍스트를 제거하여 보는 이로 하여금 이질적인 도시풍경의 편만함에 집중하도록 유도한다. 낯설게 다가오는 이 비-장소적 공간이 우리의 유토피아적 상상력의 실체라는 것을 강조함으로써 경제적 효율성과 편리성을 위한 무인 시스템에 의해 노동의 현장에서 소외되는 인간의 현존을 역설적으로 표상하고 있다.

Coexistence and Replacement 

Seungjin Ryu pays close attention to the changing urban working environment. A series of photographs taken by the artist in various locations across Korea and Japan feature images of several automated systems which sprung up with the concept of sharing economy. Also, they are an ominous sign for future embedded in the ‘untact’ culture (‘Untact’ is a neologism made by Korean using ‘un’ with ‘contact’ to refer non-contact or contact-less culture caused by COVID-19 pandemic) that has spread across the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The photographs highlight vividly colored machines and devices illuminating in the dark, which seem a component of urban landscape replacing people with a vibrant personality.  The artist intentionally removed all signage letters that provide a sense of locality to emphasize that such a scene is universal and not restricted to a specific place. This way, the audience can solely concentrate on the pervasiveness of a strange and unfamiliar urban landscape. Paradoxically, Ryu demonstrates the existence of humans being marginalized in the scene of labor by the automated system armed with its economic efficiency and convenience by underlining that this unfamiliar space lacks a sense of place, the reality of our utopian imagination.
